Sampling whole wheat pancakes while visiting a historic Gristmill in the USA was a defining moment for us – like tasting a brand new food group. We learned how freshly milled whole grains, a rich source of vitamins, minerals and fibre, are no longer a staple in the typical western diet. We also learned how local, family-owned grain mills were a vital part of agrarian-based sustainable communities (including here in New Zealand during the mid-1800s).
Soon after, we launched Heritage Mill New Zealand, a family owned and operated craft-food company in Kimbolton, Northern Manawatu. We source GE Free, organic or naturally grown grains and mill them in small batches to maintain quality and freshness. The milled grains are then incorporated into a range of baking mixes that balance taste and nutrition, without refined sugars and preservatives.
